Un lugar con historia
El edificio del Centro, cuyo origen se remonta al siglo XVII, es una de las construcciones más antiguas que se conservan en Buenos Aires. En 1716 el Solar fue donado a los frailes Franciscanos Recoletos.
Los arquitectos jesuitas Juan Krauss y Juan Wolf realizaron los planos de la primera construcción y se le atribuye al italiano Andrés Blanqui la fachada y los espacios interiores del convento. La obra fue concluída en 1732.
A partir de las primeras décadas del siglo XIX el edificio tuvo varios destinos, entre ellos una escuela de dibujo creada por el Gral. Manuel Belgrano y, a partir de los años setenta funcionó en sus claustros el Asilo de Mendigos. El edificio y el área en general fueron lugares privilegiados dentro del plan de saneamiento y embellecimiento del primer Intendente de Buenos Aires, Torcuato de Alvear.
El arquitecto Juan Buschiazzo fue el responsable de la gran remodelación que se realizara a lo largo de la década del ochenta del siglo 19, reciclaje que puede considerarse pionero y uno de los mejores de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. El mismo incluyó, en el Centro Cultural la construcción de varios pabellones, la capilla, hoy transformada en auditorio, como así también fachadas, muros y terrazas de estilo italianizante.
Posteriormente se instaló en el edificio el Hogar de Ancianos General Viamonte.En 1980 se remodeló el complejo para su nueva función de Centro Cultural, tarea encomendada a los arquitectos Clorindo Testa, Jacques Bedel y Luis Benedit.

A place with history
The Center building, which dates back to the seventeenth century, is one of the oldest buildings preserved in Buenos Aires. In 1716 the Solar was donated to the Franciscan friars Recoletos.
Jesuit architects John Krauss and John Wolf made the first planes of the construction, and the italian Andrés Blanqui is responsible of the front of the building and the interior spaces of the convent. The work was completed in 1732.
Since the early decades of the nineteenth century the building had several uses, including a school of drawing created by Gral Manuel Belgrano, and from the seventies worked in their cloisters of Beggars Asylum. Such as the building as the whole area surrounding it were privileged places within the plan of sanitation and beautification of the first mayor of Buenos Aires, Torcuato de Alvear.
The architect John Buschiazzo was responsible for the big restore that will be held throughout the eighties of the 19th century and it is considered pioneer recycling and one of the best in the city of Buenos Aires. It included building several pavilions, a chapel, now converted into an auditorium, as well as facades, walls and terraces of Italianate style.
Later it also took place int the building the Nursing Home General Viamonte.In 1980 the complex was remodeled for its new role as cultural center, a task entrusted to architects Clorindo Testa, Jacques Bedel, Luis Benedit.
